1:12 Scale Capacious Colonial – Bedroom Part 1

The Bedroom took 2 years hahaha

Because I had a massive break in between starting it and doing a few pieces like the floor, bed and closets.  I also moved states – and isn’t moving a massive dollhouse just the BEST fun? It actually travelled pretty well – the outside hadn’t been done and it did receive a couple of gouges in the MDF even with the 75 layers of bubble wrap.

Floor

Once again I made the flooring from basswood and decided on a nice natural look to match the bathroom.  I made it in 3 pieces – the centre is removable so I can get to the wires for the living room lighting.  I didn’t have any beeswax left so I used the next best thing – lip balm so it smells like fairy floss.

Closets and vanity table

I knew from the start I wanted built-in closets along the back wall. I also wanted a vanity area.  The closet frames I built from basswood, scrapwood and cardstock. The vanity is made from basswood and the marble top is a laminate sample that I KNEW would come in handy one day.  I added an overhead cupboard to the vanity for extra “storage” and used it to house some vanity lighting. The closet doors and overhead cupboard doors are all functioning.  The drawers in the closet are fakies. The vanity mirror was an old make-up mirror and I made the frame using the metal from a disposable metal lasagne pan.  All the items on the vanity are just made from bits of very important stuff I couldn’t possibly throw out and which also came in handy! The tufted vanity stool is made from a bit of an old embroidered shirt, teeny ribbon and small upholstery pins I use as “studs”. Stuffed the closets with boxes full of clothing and other bits of tat.  Eventually, I will add some hanging clothes and shoes etc. Maybe…

Feature Wall

The wall that the bed was to go against originally had a centred window but it was in the exact spot the tall bedhead would be – this was annoying.  I considered making a new high narrow window but the thought of cutting through 1cm thick MDF yet again did not excite me at all.  Instead, I decided to go with a contrasting feature wall and add a bit of excitement.  I used one of those placemats made of thin wood strips (those things are awesome and I buy them whenever I see them at the op shop) painted it a nice bright blue and stencilled it in black.  The bedhead has a “window” in it so this will show through. A bit of glue and Bob’s yer uncle as they say.

Bed and Mattress

I actually made 2 different bed heads but decided to go with this Farmhouse-ish white one.  Made from basswood it’s a simple box frame for the mattress to sit in. The mattress I made using a no-sew box spring mattress tutorial by Kris from One Inch Minis by Kris – my favourite site for mini tutorials. For the bedding and white pillow cases, I used a lovely thin cotton lining from an old skirt and hand “swirly tucked” it.  I have a real-life doona cover set with this design and was desperate to recreate it in mini.  I am very pleased with how it turned out and even managed to keep it clean. The throw is from a fake velvet hoody I had.  The tiny trim on the throw and the trim “detail” on the bed I bought from Deb at Dragonfly International – really great place to get little bits of tat! I even made a fitted sheet though I have no idea why =)

Bedside Table

Built from scratch in basswood I had to make this to fit in the space and not stick out too far.  Chalk painted bottom and natural wood top to add a bit of warmth to the room.  The bedside lamp bottom is polymer clay and I drilled out the centre with my trusty Dremel to feed the lightbulb through.  The shade is an old serviette with an interesting weave.  My favourite make for this though is the alarm clock.  I bought a bag of old watch faces off Ebay some years ago because they make realistic clock faces and they are very cheap! The bells are made from findings that I bought at Bindels Ornaments another of my favourite sites for little bits and bobs.  I have no clue what I plan to make when I buy these little teeny metal things I just know I need them in my life.

That’s it for this post and the next will show the bedroom completed!
